    Dead and Done

My first effort doing photo stacking. Used only 9 images as a test, really need a cleaner subject. This fly was dead at least a week...but at least he stayed put.

    Sminthurus viridis

Like with many of my photographs, there's a story to this shot. I was at a plant sale at Weston Park in Staffordshire this morning, with my wife and step-daughter. Before coming home we had a walk around the walled garden there and I decided to turn over a fallen leaf. The springtail Calvatomina nr. superba was on the underside. A few more leaves yielded more and others showed Sminthurinus aureus and S. elegans. I decided come back with my camera.

I returned and managed some Calvatomina and some of the usual from and dark form of Sminthurinus aureus. It was getting overcast and breezy so I thought I'd have one more look around before leaving for home. The clump of leaves I picked up had this on it. Sadly, while positioning the leaf, a gust of wind blew it and the springtail disappeared. I was somewhat upset. I've never seen this species before. I looked in the same spot but couldn't find another one. When I got back to my camera bag though, the springtail was sitting there on the outside! I got several shots and this is a focus-stack of six images.

Sminthurus viridis is the only UK springtail with a common name; the Lucerne Flea. It's big too for a globular springtail, ~2 mm. It's a common and widespread species but as with lots of the "difficult groups" of creatures, somewhat under-recorded. According to the Staffordshire Atlas of Springtails, it has only one previous record; in 1917!
