I Learned the Verb "Love" at School

The verb "I love" I learnt at school,
    "Thou love," next in rule:
"We love" let us say together,
Proving thus we love each other.

    Yours truly, please answer,

    Charles Kline

An acquaintance card with a convoluted poem based on a verb conjugation--I love, thou love, we love. For other cards that use the same illustration and similar rhyming sentiments, see Your Coral Lips Were Made to Kiss, I Stoutly will Maintain and Your Beau I Wish to Be, This Card I Therefore Send. "White Hydrangeas"

    _____

    "the hydrangeas found your
face through the crack in the
    sliding door, during the early
    morning before our bodies
decided to sweat off the night
and the fan blew cool air up
    the lilt of our shoulders
    that rolled and pressed
    like pistons--I forget what
    we spoke about.

but i felt your skin beneath
my thighs and begged for just
one picture of you, like this
all day-old and dewy and beautiful
with the morning shining out of your
chest, aglow and gentle, just one picture
of you, like this, just one picture of you

    like this

    i found that picture today
    of you being beautiful
    with the dawn rising
    up out of your skin."

THE BEAUTY OF A GENTLE SPIRIT

“Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.”

    SEPTEMBER TEARS – SOPHIE ZELMANI

    ON THIS DAY

On this day I could hardly see
but my other senses compensated me
    I had my retinopathy
    examination; drops that half-blinded me
they open up the eye to light
    so sensitive to the sun
I donned a pair of sunglasses
I wanted to flee; I wanted to run
blurry scenes; I could not drive
a friend drove me to the sea
he guided me to the water's edge
he was my eyes; he accompanied me
    I could hear the birds
I could hear all the words
of the many people who enjoyed this day
an Indian Summer's day had come
to warm our hearts and comfort some
the feelings were intense; it felt like May
beneath my dark glasses I squinted and blinked
just as well the man next to me did not see me wink
my friend shouted there's a kayak way out by the buoys
I lifted my glasses; tried to focus on the joys
usually my eyes are fairly keen
    and nothing much escapes me
I've got intuition by the bucket load
    it compensated for me visually
later that day when I got home
and my eyes began to clear
    I checked my pictures excitedly
wondering had my instincts overcome my fears
looking at each frame I was filled with wonder
hardly a blurred image in sight
even though I stumbled and I blundered
an angel caught my arm; caught a bird in flight
    angel's come in many guises
I am fortunate to have one always
guiding me through my many crises
cushioning my fall along external pathways
even in the dark I am not afraid
I can see my way so clearly
because true sight does not depend
on just the eyes to see
but from deep within our souls
and the angels who love us dearly.

    Checkout Counter (poem below)

In a week I will turn 72! How time flies when you're having fun. I feel fortunate to be here at all, since I was diagnosed with prostate cancer at 50 and thought I had just a few years left. Fortunately, the treatment I chose (brachytherapy) worked very well for me with no bad side effects and gave me at least 22 more years of life, for which I am grateful, of course. Back then I wrote this obstinate poem.

    Checkout Counter

    He caught me
    off guard
    Waiting
    in line
    For nothing
    in particular
    Just hanging
    out
    With time
    on my hands

    “Your number?” he smiled
    darkly
    One sleeve extended
    but empty
    Shifting his weight
    from shoulder
    to shoulder
    As I shook my head
    backing up and away

    “Number?,” I mumbled
    At a loss
    suddenly
    for words
    The orange plastic piece
    burning hot in my hand
    The cipher indistinct
    but glowing

    “Yours,” he nodded
    approaching with certainty
    His knowing
    dark smile
    mocking

    “No way,”
    I stammered
    Stumbling and shrugging
    Back
    Back
    Eluding his touch
    his foul breath
    those glowing eyes
    Ducking
    just in time
    I hear
    and miss
    The sudden swish
    of a blade
    neck high

    “I'm not done here.
    Not going with you
    at this time.
    Not ready.
    Not willing.
    And just not that easy,
    my hooded friend.”

    He grumbles
    mumbles
    and shakes his head
    Unaccustomed to such folly
    He turns away
    settles for the next
    in line
