Hamlet review- Oscar Isaac shines in off-beat reimagining … with dirt wrestling

    via WordPress bit.ly/2wseCBf
Director Sam Gold observes more theatric bullion with his topsy turvy version of Hamlet that refuses to be hemmed in by tradition or at times sartorial taste

An unweeded garden is a possibility the governing metaphor for Sam Golds Hamlet at the Public Theater. Opening with wildflowers strew across a table and then covering the stage floor in water and clay, it is vital, loamy and full of intellectual cross-pollination. But it could use some pruning in places.

Here, Hamlets too sullied flesh are offered by Oscar Isaac, who plays several scenes without the benefit of trousers. Isaac has a slow-burn smolder and a confident lucidity with the poem, which fits with someone who first cut his teeth on the stage before becoming a bonafide screen star. His Hamlet is angry, sardonic and has a snarling disgust for tribunal hypocrisy thats attained even more potent because of the capsizing grief he has over his fathers demise. But he is also very funny, with the kind of gallows humor that subverts trauma with merriment, which may explain why he jumps on tables and horses around with Horatio and harasses Polonius.

The question of his uncles guilt or innocence fascinates him a lot less than the problem of how to live in a world bereft of his father. Vengeance and how achieve these goals are channels for worse and more unruly feelings.

The performance begins in darkness, then glistens pendant lamps over both the house and the stage, before reverting to traditionally bred stage lighting. The costumes, with the exceptions of Gertrudes purple jumpsuit, are sloppy modern dress and there isnt much of a set to speak of, though the designer David Zinn has outfitted the stage floor in the same ugly red carpeting as the rest of the space and also built a work bathroom.( For a mad scene, Isaac emerges with a lavatory seat covering wreathed around his neck .) There is scoring and underscoring in most scenes, composed and performed by Ernst Reijseger for cello and organ.

Many of these choices are bracing and it would be fascinating to hear the provocations and debates that went into making them. But this Hamlet is even further deconstructed than Golds recent Othello and The Glass Menagerie. Like the varied performance styles from Keegan-Michael Keys comical Horatio to Ritchie Costers smooth Claudius to Gayle Rankins irate Ophelia it rarely coheres into a cogent interpreting of the play. This is Shakespeare read by pulsations of LEDs.

If one doesnt know Hamlet well( surely someone out there must have slept through English lit ), four hours later that unfamiliarity might persist. Here theres little sense of place or occasion or tragic structure. Hamlet and Laertes mud wrestle. A dead Ophelia and Polonius rise again as the gravediggers. Hamlet is deeply offended by a lasagna. How else to explain the way he stabs and stabs and stabs it.

Frankly, theres a lot here that defies explanation. What constructs Gold such a superb director of new plays is a dedication to telling their narratives feelingly and lucidly. He doesnt feel that same responsibility to classics, which can be a good thing. Too many Shakespeare revivals are well-appareled trudges from monologue to soliloquy. You wont feel that foot-dragging here, even though the pacing can race and slack. Instead, you get a production that questions and dares, pesters and deflects. Thats exciting, but its also frustrating.
