    Another near miss

Two automobiles stopped inside of the crossing gates at 20th Street (C.P. Buckbee - CN milepost 83.55W) in Rockford, IL as an eastbound NS loaded ethanol unit train approached. The most distant of the two made a hasty U-turn and rocketed away. But the car closest to the tracks stood his (or her) ground with the apparent attitude that "I was here first, the train can go around." This car didn't move an inch. The engineer was obviously concerned about how close the car was to the tracks. He leaned out and made a gesture questioning "WHY?" This is just about 1/2 mile from where a teenager was recently struck and killed while trespassing on the tracks. If any law enforcement is interested I have photos that show the license plate very clearly.

    Grange Cemetery Superintendent’s Lodge, Edinburgh

By the eminent architect David Bryce, 1847. A rectangular-plan asymmetrical lodge house. Stugged ashlar with polished ashlar dressings; architraved and chamfered reveals. Base course; quoins; overhanging timber eaves. Gabled bay at centre with square blank tablet set in gablehead. 3-pane windows with central casement panels. Variegated fish-scale slate roof with distinctive tall paired diamond wallhead stacks with double cornices, group of 4 to rear.

The Edinburgh Southern Cemetery Company issued a prospectus for their new burying ground in 1847, outlining the benefits of the site under 3 headings: "amenity or beauty of situation"; "proximity to the City"; and "the highest attainable security that the remains therein deposited shall continue undisturbed". The scale of charges, from 2 to 12 per grave was designed to encourage "all classes of the community" to acquire their own private burial plot. The rows of 2 plots are distinguishable by small stone slabs rather than headstones.

Unlike other Edinburgh cemeteries, this one was laid out by David Bryce compared to most others in Edinburgh by City Architect David Cousin. It was opened 15 May 1847 and the first internment was Dr Thomas Chalmers. It was originally entitled the Southern Edinburgh Cemetery.

It is curious that an architect such as Bryce should bother himself with a project that is the duty of a city architect. I can only assume it was a favour to Cousin who was held in high esteem and suffered from chronic health problems.
