Paris France ~ Le Passage des Princes ~ Former Arcade

Despite the transformations of Paris operated by Baron Haussmann, which caused many passages to disappear, a decree of 3 September 1860 authorized the opening of this passage. It was the last covered passage built in Paris at the time of Haussmann.

The banker Jules Mirès bought the "Grand Hotel of the Princes and of Europe", a palace located 97 rue de Richelieu, as well as a plot for the construction of a passage constituting a shortcut for pedestrians. It was a gallery with a rather simple decoration surmounted by a double-sloped canopy with rhythm on each span by double metal arches forming arabesques. The passage was inaugurated in 1860, under the name of passage Mirès, and was appreciated at the time for its appearance of good taste and its spacious character. Shortly after the opening of the passage, the company Jules Mirès went bankrupt, and by 1866 the passage became the property of the life insurance company, which had since become the AGF. Between 1879 and 1883, the gallery of La Vie moderne, founded by Georges Charpentier, was opened at the corner of the passage on the Boulevard des Italiens, where most of the Impressionists

    CH-JonathanCoolidge-Wife-SIL-GFNY-Mar1900

(From the photo album of my dad's Aunt Clara Huggins, 1875-1958) From March 1900 (original print is in pretty poor shape). Clara did not identify this photo, but I am pretty sure (100% positive) that this is Clara's employer, Glens Falls businessman and industrialist Jonathan Coolidge, his wife Hannah McEachron Coolidge, and Hannah's sister, Ruth McEachron, who lived with them. This is in their house at 161 Glen Street in the City of Glens Falls. Clara started here about 1897 when she was 22 years old. She was a live-in domestic, who cooked and cleaned for the Coolidges. The Coolidges were childless. Coolidge had been born in March 1832 in nearby Bolton, NY, on Lake George, a brother to business partner, Thomas Coolidge.

In the 1900 US Federal Census, enumerated on 1 June 1900, approximately 3 months later, Mr. Coolidge is 68 years old and is listed as a Manufacturer of Paper; Mrs. Coolidge is 63 years old (and married 27 years); Miss McEachron is 56 years old; and Clara is listed at 25 years old, a servant and cook, employed all year long.

I am not sure which woman is Mrs. Coolidge, but if I had to guess I would pick the woman on the right (although she is not wearing a ring on her left-hand ring finger, but neither is the other woman).

Mr. Coolidge was a prominent member of the Glen Club, with other Glens Falls and area businessmen, on Glen Island in Lake George, NY. He may have had another property on Assembly Point on the Washington County side of Lake George. Clara was a prolific amateur painter of water colors and oils. She painted many scenes of Lake George. I have one that was painted in 1900, possibly near Assembly Point. Glen Island where the Glen Camp was originally is now a popular island camping area for the State of New York.

Here is a short biography of, with testimonials to, Mr. Coolidge by the current Glens Falls City historian: cityofglensfalls.com/DocumentCenter/View/2036

A photograph of this house at 161 Glen Street in Glens Falls is shown here: books.google.com/books?id=hfpnQM94AdMC&pg=PA68&lp...
The house was demolished in 1919-20, after Mrs. Coolidge died in 1918 (Mr. Coolidge died in December 1912) to make room for Glens Falls' City Park and Crandall Library.

(I tried interesting the Glens Falls City Historian and the Chapman Historical Museum of Glens Falls (the main historical museum for the City) in this photograph (and photos of the interior of their house), as few photos of Mr. Coolidge, listed as one of the important citizens for the development of Glens Falls [once a very prosperous place] existed, but they have shown no interest. The Chapman Museum even expressed bewilderment as to why I was contacting them about the photos. So I post them here.)
